What you will learn from this session:

Are you ready to dive into the Walker Learning pedagogy and see first-hand how play-based learning and explicit teaching can be seamlessly integrated to create an engaging and authentic learning experience? This one-day tour visits a school where you will observe students and teachers in action, demonstrating the Walker Learning Approach. You will gain unique insights into real-life classrooms and discover practical strategies for implementing Walker Learning in your own setting. Take advantage of the opportunity to engage with in-depth professional learning led by our experienced consultants.

This session can be completed alongside other sessions in our Walker Learning Certification pathway or as a stand-alone session ensuring you’re ready to make your own learning spaces places of belonging, exploration, and meaningful engagement for all students.

By attending a Walker Learning Study Tour you will:

  • Gain an understanding of core elements of Walker Learning such as Tuning In, Investigations, Reflection, and the roles of Focus Children, the Reporter, and the Photographer.
  • Experience Walker Learning’s unique blend of explicit teaching and play-based learning, which integrates literacy and numeracy within practical tasks and authentic contexts, enhancing both skill development and engagement.
  • Learn the principles that support designing engaging, child-centred environments that foster autonomy, creativity, and learning through purposeful play.
  • Develop skills to implement Investigation sessions that support literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional growth, with learning embedded within meaningful contexts and linked to children’s interests.
  • Explore practical strategies for linking Walker Learning with curriculum outcomes, making connections to literacy and numeracy frameworks.
  • See first hand examples of effective learning spaces that inspire and sustain children’s engagement, promoting active exploration and inquiry.
  • Understand how the learning environment can serve as a 'third teacher,' facilitating hands-on, open-ended learning that deepens students’ understanding and self-regulation.
  • Gain an introduction to Walker Learning documentation and explore how it supports planning, observations, assessment, and reporting.
  • Discover ways to foster community and collaboration within the classroom, supporting peer relationships and nurturing a positive learning culture.
  • Take away tips for implementing Walker Learning to suit different classroom demographics, cultures, and school contexts.

A Walker Learning Study Tour is an invaluable opportunity for teachers and leaders who are new to Walker Learning or are looking to refine their current practice. Whether you’re just starting out or seeking inspiration for next steps, this session will equip you with the tools and insights needed to bring the Walker Learning pedagogy to life in your classroom. This session is especially suited for educators who want a practical, observational experience of the Walker Learning pedagogy in action.
