PLAYING WITH LITERACY AND NUMERACY IN EARLY CHILDHOOD
Literacy and Numeracy is everywhere! How do we intentionally build children’s literacy and numeracy awareness and skills in appropriate ways in the years before school?
Description
Playing with Literacy and Numeracy in Early Childhood.
Discover how Play can build the foundations for confident communicators and mathematical thinkers.
Literacy and numeracy are everywhere! From storytelling, conversations and imaginative play to counting, measuring, sorting and exploring patterns, young children are constantly discovering literacy and numeracy in the world around them.
This session guides educators to recognise these valuable learning opportunities through child initiated play and intentionally extend children's understanding without compromising the joy and spontaneity of play. It also helps bridge research into practice.
Join us for this practical and engaging professional development session as we explore how to embed meaningful literacy and numeracy learning into everyday play, routines and learning environments.
Discover developmentally appropriate teaching strategies that strengthen children's early language, communication, emergent literacy and mathematical thinking, while supporting the learning outcomes of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF V2.0).
What will you learn?
Participants attending Playing with Literacy and Numeracy in Early Childhood will:
- Understand early literacy and numeracy development: Explore how young children develop foundational skills through play, exploration, relationships and meaningful everyday experiences.
- Strengthen intentional teaching practices: Recognise opportunities to scaffold learning through conversations, questioning, modelling and responsive interactions.
- Bring literacy and numeracy into everyday play: Discover practical strategies for developing oral language, vocabulary, storytelling, early writing, number sense, patterns, measurement and spatial awareness.
- Create engaging learning environments: Explore resources, provocations and play experiences that naturally encourage children to investigate literacy and mathematical concepts.
- Plan, observe and extend children's learning: Identify emerging skills, respond to individual learning needs and plan meaningful experiences that support children's progress.
- Connect practice to curriculum outcomes: Build confidence in linking play-based literacy and numeracy experiences to the EYLF V2.0 and the National Quality Standard.
Supporting the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF V2.0)
This professional development supports educators to implement the EYLF V2.0, particularly:
- Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators: Supporting language, literacy, numeracy, communication, symbols and pattern systems.
- Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners: Encouraging curiosity, problem-solving, investigation and mathematical reasoning.
- Play-based learning and intentionality: Combining child led exploration with purposeful educator interactions that extend learning.
Through practical examples and strategies, educators will develop greater confidence in creating engaging, inclusive and curriculum aligned literacy and numeracy experiences for children in the years before school.
Make every play experiences a learning opportunity!
Join us and discover how small, intentional teaching moments can make a big difference to children's early literacy and numeracy development.
